Me and my experiences

Hi there, my name is Luis Oliva. I am 21 years old and I live in Las Vegas NV and I'm a student at CSN, studying the construction management program. Going into school wasn't easy for me because I was so used to going to work but going to school completely changed my schedule so it wasn't easy changing and fully commit to it. I got motivated by seeing my brother graduating UNLV so I put in my mind " if he could do it, why can't I? " So, I'm going for it, hopefully it goes great for me as it went for him and accomplishing his goals.

My first impression of IS 101 was a bit odd and thought to myself I don't need this class, but as class went on is it useful because it teaches you how to properly set up your email professionally. Whether is to a teacher/professor or to a company. This class is showing me how to actually focus because at one point I will have to send an important email to someone.

By using the internet skills (2.5.3) is an everyday use that get people through the day either is them sending an email to their boss or when people have some free time in their hand they usually go to their social media apps and find some entertainment. By using the internet helps me to turn in my assignments to my class. It also helps me having a virtual meeting with my professors whenever I need help with an assignment.

  1. I'm elated to hear IS101 is showing you how to focus :-)

Yes, adapting your schedule to school may not be easy but I know you can adapt and fully commit to succeed in higher education!

If your brother can graduate from UNLV, you can definitely graduate from CSN ^_^

  2. Hi Luis, balancing work and school is really hard, especially when both feel like priorities pulling you in different directions. I think it is good that your brother motivates you, but I also believe it is important to focus on your own path because everyone has different strengths. When I compare myself to my siblings, I sometimes feel worse instead of better, so I try to compete with myself instead. That mindset helps me stay focused without getting discouraged. I also see what you mean about internet skills being part of everyday life. If you know how to use the internet efficiently, it can really make your work easier and save a lot of time. Turning in assignments, communicating, and even researching becomes faster when you know what you are doing. The more skilled you are with it, the less stressful your workload feels.

  3. Hello Luis, I love the way you think! I know people say things like, "Not everybody excels in the same thing, we all have different talents and skills." And yes, that is right, but two truths can coexist! It doesn't mean it's impossible to do something. As long as you put effort and your heart into something, I am sure you can do it. You're right, if he could do it, then you absolutely can!

  4. Hi Luis, thanks for sharing your story. It’s cool that your brother graduating from University of Nevada, Las Vegas motivated you to go to school and pursue your goals. I also thought IS101 wasn’t going to be that useful at first, but it actually teaches important things like writing professional emails and using technology better. The internet skills you mentioned are definitely something we use every day for school and communication. Good luck with your construction management program!

  5. Hi Luis, sometimes those big changes in our lives are hard to make, but it’s really nice that you felt inspired by your brother to pursue a career. It’s amazing that you’re pushing yourself to become a better version of yourself and going after your own goals. I have to say I disagree a little with the idea that this class isn’t important, because I personally felt from the beginning that it teaches useful skills. But I’m really glad that as the class went on you were able to see the value in it, especially with things like writing professional emails and communicating properly. Those are skills we will definitely use in real life.

  6. Hello Luis. Sometimes it can be just one person to inspire you to do better things, I'm glad that you found the inspiration to pursue higher education. I'm sure it will go well for you. While I kind of knew how to write an email to Professors, learning how to insert my credentials at the end of every email I send was new. We've learned all kinds of professional life skills that never even crossed my mind before this class.

  7. Hey Luis, I liked how you mentioned learning to write professional emails through this class. That’s actually a really useful information systems skill since clear communication through email is important in both school and the workplace.

Your point about everyday internet use was good too, since tools like online assignments and virtual meetings show how information systems support communication and productivity.

  8. Commitment to school and work is a whole different beast to handle. I also had a 3 year gap before I went back to school and it hit harder than I expected. That said, kudos to you for seeing your brother's achievement and using it as a motivation to create your own story in college. More power to your journey and does my Lego building counts as a construction? If so, please manage it, they keep bringing the wrong colored brick.

  9. Hi Luis! I get that switching from working to focusing on school can be a bit of a shock. It’s really cool that your brother inspired you to go for it. Keep at it, you’re definitely on the right track!

  10. I had a similar expectation of IS101 as you did. I first thought that all this class would teach you about was how to write professionally. However, the class introduced me to a lot of commands that can make fulfilling tasks in Microsoft Word convenient. For example, I learned to how to make page breaks and how to move pictures around. I am looking forward to learning about the different features in Excel, although I am unfamiliar with many of its commands.

  13. Hey Luis, that's good your brother made you strive to be better meaning that you're capable just like he is. My brother went to the military and got discharged now he's going back to school like a trade school. He might even finish before me and I started CSN after 2021 and I might finish by before Christmas or next May. About Internet skills, we're literally using it right now, it's crazy that we're doing it though an old but gold way like blogs, but they're still relevant and really helps us understand these skills.

  14. Hey Luis, I'm glad you decided to go back to school despite already having a job. Besides the cost, I don't think there's anything wrong with continuing your education. I might a grandma on the airplane once who despite having a steady career in teaching art, continues to go to community college to get 2 year degrees like it's nothing! Good luck to you with your college journey!

  15. Hey Luis, you got the right mindset, which was stating that if your brother can do it so can you, and that is very true. Having that mindset will definitely help you stay motivated throughout this semester, especially this class. Construction management seems like a very good career choice and I'm pretty sure you can achieve it. Best of luck to your journey!

  16. Hi Luis, it is wonderful that you were able to follow in your brothers' footsteps. Just keep pushing forward and IS101 is an amazing class because I know from personal experience that not all people in the workforce are trained in office and these skills will set you apart. Construction management sounds like an awesome career I hope you have amazing success.
